Wild Pacific Coast Iris

The wild Pacific Coast Iris, "Iris Tenax", on our property have begun their annual show.

These native iris grow in dense, compact, circular clumps. The colors in our areas variety from deep purple to the light lavender and every shade in between. These iris are found in most of Western Oregon and Southern Washington west of the Cascade Mountains. They grow in mostly open or lightly shaded sites in open oak woodlands. Ours grow in amazing numbers in open meadows that have previously been logged. In 1825 explorer David Douglas sent back to England seed from "iris tenax" that he collected.

About half of the blooms are now open on the plants.
