The Crab Apple

Right on schedule, our "Royal Raindrops" crab apple is setting its future flowers. My concern is the lack of blossom clumps this year. In a good year, each leaf set would support a cluster of flowers. This year, it looks like only about 20% of these junctions have any flowers. Last year we had a very good flowering display, but two years ago it was really light. I am afraid that we are in for a repeat of 2011's poor display once again this year. I wish I knew what is causing these yearly fluctuations.
